«RZD-partner» published interesting statistics on the turnover of the wagon in 2021–2023.
Wagon turnover is the time spent by the wagon on all operations related to loading and delivery from the beginning of one loading to the beginning of the next (or from loading to unloading). This indicator directly indicates the speed of loading and transportation: high turnover is bad, low turnover is good.
The graph from the RZD report shows the values of the wagon turnover for the last 8 years, as well as intra-annual fluctuations:
- Over the past two years, the wagon turnover has been the worst in the last 8 years (even in 14 years — since the introduction of the new calculation methodology).
- The turnover of a freight wagon for 2023 was 18.8 days — this is 3.9% (17 hours) more than last year (exactly 18 days).
- Usually, turnover increases (worsens) in April–May–June, and then decreases again. The last two years were an exception — in 2022 and 2023, from September to December, the traditional improvement of the indicator did not happen.
— in 2023, the time spent on freight operations increased by 9.5 hours;
— the downtime at technical stations increased by 7.3 hours;
— the share of the «time in motion» indicator decreased by 0.7% — this means that the time of various downtime increased and the wagon stands longer and travels less time.
At the same time, considering the structure of the wagon turnover by elements in percent, it can be noticed that in 2022 and 2023, the share of downtime under freight operations is less than in 2021 (45.1 and 45.5% versus 48.0%, respectively). And the downtime at technical stations, on the contrary, increased in 2022 and 2023 compared to 2021 (34.7 and 35.0% versus 31.4%).
In the last three years, those components of the wagon turnover that depend on the work of shippers have improved, while those elements that depend on the work of RZD and, in particular, on the management of station operations have worsened.
